2 More Ways to Add Class to a Builder-Grade Home

builder-grade updates

Hey, hey! One of my posts that's received the most traffic is 10 Ways to Add Class to a Builder-Grade Home. It seems a lot of us are looking for simple swaps for those cheap fixtures and finishes that prefab home builders are so fond of using. We live in a prefab home, as a matter of fact, and over the years, have put a lot of effort into transforming what I once called our "beige box" into a home that has some character. Here are two more things I checked off the list this week: upgrading doorknobs and spray painting light switches in our entryway.

I swear, I don't know why it has taken me so darn long to get to these two projects. I've been bothered by those knobs and switches for years, guys, and it took me less than an hour to fix these little eyesores.

First, I must confess, I had tried to spray paint our brass doorknobs a couple of years ago, and as you can see from my before pictures, the paint didn't take. A lot of people have had success with painting their doorknobs if you believe Pinterest, but I wasn't one of them. D. Lawless Hardware came to my rescue with these great-looking oil-rubbed bronze doorknobs for both or garage door and half-bath door. Aaaahhhh...much better.

Next up, the beige light switches. While I had swapped the brass light switch covers in favor of white ones a long time ago, it bothered me to no end that the switches were still 1970s beige. Not to mention dirty. I know, it's pretty easy to re-wire new ones, but guys...I don't know. Sometimes I can't even be bothered with the smallest of projects. So, I removed the switch plate covers, covered all but the switches really well with paper towels and painters tape, and sprayed those suckers white. (Please Note: Don't try this with outlets because the paint will get into the holes and cause major electrical havoc.)

I did this one, too.

So there you go. Two more upgrades to our builder-grade abode that make a ton of difference in my opinion. It's the little things.
