Decorating with Faux Flowers

Hey there, friends! I'm writing about a polarizing topic today. Fake flowers. Do you love 'em? Hate 'em? Have no feelings whatsover? Well, I have a love-hate relationship with them, I have to admit. The really bad ones...like the ones that are completely huge (and could in no way be real because no one would spend that much on fresh flowers), or the ones that are really dusty, or the ones that just look, well, fake? I despise those. Like, they anger me. On the other hand, smaller vases of faux stems--the high-quality ones--can be gorgeous and because I don't exactly have a green thumb (may the many houseplants I've tried RIP), I use them a lot.

Joss & Main has some very high-quality faux flowers by Creative Displays, Inc. that even faked out my very discerning friend the other day. With Mother's Day right around the corner, why not choose a bouquet for Mom that will bring her lasting enjoyment? Check out some great options from Joss & Main over on About.com, along with some amazing tips from their style director. Besides choosing flowers that look realistic, here are my four tricks that will make you re-think fake flowers :

  1. Pair them with authentic natural elements. This vase of faux hydrangeas looks more believeable next to a piece of driftwood.

  2. Use blooms that are a contrasting color. Artificial flowers that are too matchy-matchy with your decor look staged. This same vase of hydrangeas looks more realistic in our blue and gray bedroom because it seems like I was limited to the color choices in the garden or at the store.

  3. Put away unseasonal varieties. While succulents and faux plants work any time of year, choose fake flowers that are available at the time of year you want to use them. In other words, get rid of the tulips come June, and swap them out for roses or other summer flowers.
  4. Choose arrangements that are more free-form. This vase of white hydrangeas has greenery poking out at varying heights, which looks much more realistic.

So there you have it! As long as you choose carefully, faux florals get a thumbs-up from me.
