Inexpensive DIY Wall Art

Unique paintings and original, artist-signed prints sure are nice but who can afford them? But on the other hand, it's kind of a bummer to buy inexpensive wall art at Target, Bed Bath & Beyond and Ikea because chances are, you'll see what's on your wall on someone else's, or in a catalog, or just about every time you go into a store. I figure that if you like something enough to give it a place of prominence in your home, you certainly don't want to get sick of it in a few months because you see it everwhere. That's why I'm a huge fan of DIY art. It's original, personal, customized for your home, and...needless to say, inexpensive.

I've got several DIY art pieces around our home with plans to include a lot more. Below are some ideas from around the web...prepare to be inspired!

One of my all-time favorite things to put on the wall are plates.

Next up are framed objects and the possibilities are endless here. Baby clothes, vintage toys, sewing notions, bottle caps, wine corks, buttons, leaves and flowers, and the list goes on and on.

If you've got some frames and just don't know what to put in them, word art is really popular right now. Centsational Girl offers a great tutorial on how to create your own printable word art. And you'd be amazed at what you can with just some downloadable clip art and free software like Picasa. One of my favorite places to find free, high-quality clip art is The Graphics Fairy. Some other ideas for two-dimensional items to frame are:
  • Concert tickets

  • Playbills

  • Vintage postcards

  • Tea-stained sheet music

  • Scrapbooking paper

  • Custom silhouettes

  • Book jackets

  • Children's drawings

  • Handkerchiefs

Finally, here are a few more ideas that don't really fall into the above categories but are great ideas nonetheless.

Ombre art from Young House Love

Puffy paint canvas from Virginia and Charlie

Chevron Shoebox Lids from Spunky Junky

Basically, I could be writing this post 'till next Tuesday, but I'll stop now. The point is, the possibilities are endless for creating DIY art on a shoestring. So get crackin'! Put something up on those bare walls already. (I should talk.)
